southern artists: katie runnels
it's impossible to mention shop scad without talking about its former art director: katie runnels. katie was responsible for the interior design and decoration of shopscad and proposed the original design concept for their website, as well as curating fine art submissions, styling website photography, and creating artwork and design concepts for promotional materials.
in addition to the amazing work katie did for shopscad, she's done equally amazing work on her own, through her studio, the constant gatherer. katie is primarily a mixed media artist whose collage-style sculptures have become a big hit on sites like etsy and poppytalk handmade. she has a real knack for combining found objects (which are often vintage) and turning them into beautiful sculptures, vignettes, and yarn wreaths.
for me, katie's work represents a powerful segment of the young southern artist community. she and her counterparts have a great respect for the art, objects and traditions of the past and always seem to find creative ways to work these actual objects and fragments into their contemporary work. i personally love katie's use of non-traditional accents like vintage scrabble letters and vintage millinery flowers, but her work is so wonderfully varied that there's always something for everyone.

{guest blogger grace bonney} goin' south: artists below the mason dixon

hi everyone! i'm so happy to be posting over at barb's site this week- it's always fun to step away from my site for a bit and talk about something different.
although most southerners wouldn't consider my home town of virginia beach "the south", i've always found myself strongly identifying with the traditions and culture of the deep south. even though we're technically south of the mason dixon, this week i'll be focusing on some of my favorite artists who are well below the line and whose work is steeped in the imagery and stories of my favorite part of the country. [there are so many incredible artists to post that i'll be narrowing my focus to scad alumni- in hopes that i can come back again in the future and cover more artists outside of georgia]
so thank you to barb for having me and let's get ready to head south...
southern artists: stephanie howard

when it comes to discovering great southern artists, i owe a debt of gratitude to shop scad. the savannah college of art and design creates and celebrates so many incredible artists and designers that i always discover someone new when i'm down visiting.

one of the first artists that i really connected with was stephanie howard. i'll never forget when i first saw her work- i had this other-wordly feeling, as if i was seeing a picture of someone i'd known in another life, in another time. i was standing in front of one of her "shag queen" portraits and was haunted by the look on the woman's face, and in awe over stephanie's illustrative style. she uses tiny lines and hash marks to create each piece (almost like intaglio printing), something you can only tell when you're up close to each work.

what i love most about stephanie's work is her reliance on the stories and imagery of the deep south. i've never seen a young artist whose work seems so in touch all things 'southern gothic'. i'm always showing her work to friends, some of whom find the women's faces in stephanie's work to be almost eerily sad- but that's what i love about her work. there's a haunting look in each face, and a sense that each woman she draws has a story to tell, laying just below the paper.

*stay tuned for more from the south this afternoon......
