painting time!!:)

As promised I will attempt to post a tutorial!! I don't have step by step photos, so forgive me .........

I am going to use the black piece as my focal point ........

1. wipe down and clean all junk and gunk off of the piece :) remove all hardware , and wood filler any holes that will not be needed.
2. lightly sand all surface areas with fine sand paper - 120 grit .... I use an orbital sander for the sake of my arms!
3. tape off the windows, or any areas where you don't want paint
4. this is where it gets personal, because I rarely prime my pieces !!!! I only prime if it is absolutely essential!! Like if it is a knotty pine or redwood, or stained with permanent marker, etc.
5. paint with latex satin finish paint ...... I used a foam pad on this piece because it makes painting the shelves a snap! The foam pads are by Shur-line. I cut in all the creases and corners with a brush. I normally use two coats of paint but use your own discretion.
6. when the piece is dry I always use one of three finishes : brown wax (fiddes is my favorite), minwax stain, or clear water based poly. This piece was a minwax stain, to give it shine, and a finished solid look.
7. I apply the stain a couple of ways depending on my mood, or the piece!! Apply it with a chip brush, or a clean lint free rag , and wipe off excess with a lint free rag as well. Allow at least 48 hours to dry , until it is not " tacky" to the touch!
8. After your finish is completely done and dry, remove all tape, and put on the new or old hardware. This is the time as well, to drill new holes for new hardware if you have covered existing holes with wood filler.
9. Enjoy your new piece!
